Description
The development site is located at Hall Farm, Everton. It is situated 16km southeast of Doncaster and 12km west of Gainsborough. The site is approximately 0.6 hectares and presently occupied by two modern agricultural Dutch barns, an associated yard and grassed area.
The trial trenching strategy comprised the excavation of five 30m long x 1.8m wide trenches and one 25m long x 1.8m wide trench.
All six trenches had a similar stratigraphy, showing demolition layers that appeared to relate to the demolition of previous 19th century farm buildings within the development area, with the exception of one trench which was located in a field to the northwest of the other trenches.
The only features exposed were a ditch terminus containing a single sherd of medieval pottery, and an undated posthole. A soil sample from the ditch suggested general mixed refuse was being dumped into the feature, which is unsurprising given the site is located relatively close to the medieval village core.
