Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land at Hall Farm, Gainsborough Road, Everton in Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning permission for the demolition of agricultural barns and the erection of five dwellings. There is very little evidence of prehistoric activity within the vicinity of the site. It has been suggested that a Roman road leading to the legionary fort at Scaftworth ran more or less along the current A631/Gainsborough Road and a small number of Roman finds have been identified within the wider Everton Parish. Everton is recorded in the Domesday Book as a fairly large settlement, but the only medieval activity of note is the Grade II* Listed Church of the Holy Trinity. There are numerous post-medieval houses and farmsteads nearby, mostly in the village core to the northwest of the site. There are also historic farm buildings located immediately adjacent to the site, which have been converted into residential dwellings. Six trenches were excavated, each measuring 30m long by 1.8m wide, with the exception of one of the trenches which was shortened to 25m due to a deep demolition deposit at the southeast end. A medieval ditch terminus was recorded in one trench and an undated posthole was recorded in another trench.
