Description
A geophysical survey was conducted over a c. 36.2ha area of arable and grassland at Trent BESS, 226m south of Laneham, Nottinghamshire.
The geophysical survey comprised hand-carried GNSS-positioned fluxgate gradiometer survey. The instrument used was a Bartington Grad-13 Digital Three-Axis Gradiometer. The traverse interval was 1m and the sample interval was 200Hz reprojected to 0.125m.
The geophysical survey has revealed a variety of anomalies with archaeological, agricultural, and undetermined origins. Magnetic disturbance from modern activities is generally confined to the edges of the survey area, surrounding buried services, pylons and overhead cables. Natural variations in the form of possible former watercourses were also identified in the centre and south of the survey area.
The survey identified anomalies of an archaeological origin in the south region of the survey area and beyond, in the form of quadrilateral enclosures with subdivisions and partial enclosures with linear, curvilinear, and pit-like features within and around these enclosures. The anomalies intersect each other suggesting multiple phases of settlement, and a possible pathway was identified.
Evidence of historical agricultural activity has been identified in the form of former mapped field boundaries, drainage features, and former ploughing regimes.
