Abstract/Summary

An assessment of the subsurface archaeological potential was undertaken on a c. 36.2ha area of land at the Trent BESS site in Laneham, Nottinghamshire. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully carried out across the survey area, detecting anomalies categorized as archaeological, agricultural, natural, and undetermined. The survey recorded archaeological activity in the form of quadrilateral enclosures, possible partial enclosures, and curvilinear, linear and pit-like features along with a possible pathway. Agricultural activity was evident across the survey area, with features such as former mapped field boundaries, drainage systems, and former ploughing trends. Natural variations in the underlying geology, identified as possible former floodplain regions, were also detected. Magnetic disturbances were generally limited to the edges of the survey area, surrounding buried services, high voltage pylons, and overhead wires, which may obscure weaker anomalies, if present. Additionally, further linear and curvilinear anomalies of undetermined origin were identified. While these may be related to natural processes, agricultural, or modern activities, the possibility of an archaeological origin cannot be excluded.
