Description
A geophysical survey of the central green area, just to the south of the Scheduled moated site, was undertaken across a gridded area measuring 40m x 60m. The resistivity survey used a RM15D meter manufactured by Geoscan Research and adopted a standard survey resolution of 1m x 1m over the series of grids, using 0.5m probe spacing.
The area was chosen in order to investigate the potential for buried archaeological features in the area between the moated manor house to the north, and the later Medieval palace / post-Medieval hall to the south. No previous features were known to exist in this location, although proximity to the hall and moated site, and the lack of development in this area, suggested there was potential worth investigating.
Previous fieldwork, map studies and walkover surveys all suggest that Wiverton continually developed in a southerly direction from the site of the Medieval moated building. Any features that did exist in the open green area could therefore relate to either the early (12th-13th century phase) or later (15th century phase) development of Wiverton.
The resistivity survey revealed two distinct areas of high resistance – suggesting potential stone foundations – one of which appears to be a long, linear structure that runs north-east/south-west and terminates in a semi-circular feature at the northern end. It covers an area approximately 30m long by around 10m wide. Beyond this, on the northern extreme of the survey grid, a second high-resistance anomaly, also square or rectangular, can be seen. These results show the huge potential for this under-developed part of the settlement at Wiverton, and excavation may help to better understand the purpose, structure and chronology of the features in relation to the Medieval development at Wiverton.
