Description

A GPS survey, using an EMLID Reach RS+, of existing earthworks that surround the settlement was undertaken at Wiverton, circumvallating the site of the Scheduled moated manor house with its ditch and fishponds, the current village and Wiverton Hall. Six sections were intitally proposed but two were not fully surveyed. The GPS survey allowed for a complete recording of visible earthworks, although the surviving structure of these differed greatly. For example, the western bank and ditch were reputedly levelled / filled in within living memory, but a slight depression can still be seen along the current field boundary. A surviving bank can also be noted in the south-west corner although it was unclear if this is a true representation of the original bank structure or a more recent modification. Similarly, the eastern section of ditched earthworks appears to have been recut, most likely when the site was strengthened during the Civil War. Further earthwork features were identified to the west of the moated site, and these appeared to be the remnants of an old road or trackway. The trackway appears to run east-west just to the north of the fishpond earthworks and LIDAR imagery shows it continues below ground as a linear feature into the field immediately to the east, where fieldwalking in the 1970s revealed a wealth of material relating to the early Medieval village at Wiverton. The trackway continues as a noticeable depression, westwards, for around 130m, before turning 90° and running in a southerly direction.
