Description
The site forms a roughly L–shaped area of approximately 3000 square metres and is located towards the centre of Bingham, between numbers 59 and 61 on the north side of Long Acre at the rear of the Chesterfield Arms.
An initial scheme of six 20m long x 1.6m wide trial trenches was laid out.Removal of the topsoil and any other overburden was undertaken by mechanical excavator using a toothless ditching bucket. On completion of the removal of the overburden, the nature of the underlying deposits was assessed by hand excavation and the trenches were cleaned by hand to enable the identification and analysis of the archaeological features exposed.
Investigation of the features was undertaken only as far as required to determine their date, form and function. The work consisted of half- or quarter-sectioning of features as required and, where appropriate, the removal of layers.
