Full Description

The investigations revealed pre-Roman features, possibly associated with settlement to the north, located within the central and northeast part of the development site. These are tentatively dated to the Iron Age, although Neolithic and Bronze Age activity has also been recorded within the vicinity. The features are likely to be agricultural in nature.

Two features recorded within the northern half of the site were truncated by Roman cuts and have been assigned a pre-Roman date. Furthermore, the recovery of residual sherds of Iron Age type pottery from the site provides supporting evidence for such a phase.

In the northeast corner of the site was an east-west aligned linear ditch/gully with concave sides and base. Measuring at least 6.88m long x 1.21m wide this feature contained dark grey clayey silt with occasional small stones.

To the west of the ditch was a 9.45m long x 1.32m wide north-south aligned curvilinear ditch with irregular sides and concave base. Fills along the length of the ditch were variable and included a dark greyish brown sandy clay, grey silty sand, mid yellowish brown silty sand, mid pinkish brown sandy clayey silt to a dark brown sandy clayey silt all with moderate angular gravel.

Due to the lack of artefactual evidence obtained from these features it is difficult to determine if they are associated and from the same period. Furthermore, if other undated features are also pre-Roman this activity is enhanced and indicates a more substantial exploitation of the site at that time.

The possible pre-Roman features are located within the central and northeast part of the development site and indicate the focus of activity during the period. It is possible that these features are of different prehistoric periods from the Neolithic to the Iron Age as activity is known from these times within the vicinity. However, the small number of pre-Roman sherds retrieved from this site suggests a limited presence at the close of the pre-Roman Iron Age.

The precise period of the features is unclear but the small number present suggests only limited utilisation. The lack of artefactual evidence would also suggest that this site was not inhabited during the prehistoric period.
