Full Description

12th – 13th century deposits:

Within one trench was a sub-circular pit measuring 1.1m in diameter x 0.45m deep and containing a dark greyish brown sandy clayey silt with occasional flat stones. Nottingham glazed ware pottery dating to the 13th century was retrieved from this feature.

14th – 15th century deposits:

Located in the centre of the site was a 20m+ long x 1.42m wide linear with convex steep sides and base that was orientated north-south. Filling this ditch were several greyish/reddish brown/brown clayey silt/sandy clay/clayey sand deposits with occasional small sub-angular stones, bone and charcoal. These fills varied along the length of the linear suggesting intentional back-filling rather than natural silting. The location of this ditch adjacent to and cutting late-Roman ditch may imply that the earlier feature was still visible when the second was cut or that the location of the linears was coincidental but influenced by the landscape.

At the southern most end of the medieval ditch was a 0.7m long x 0.57m wide sub-rectangular pit with two sandy clayey silt fills. A small sub-rounded post-hole with a dark brown sandy silt fill and three other features, a post hole, pit and linear were also recorded adjacent to this pit and ditch. These features are situated at the end of the wide linear (mentioned above) and probably indicate the position of an entrance or opening. The recovery of a hinge pivot may be significant and indicate that a gate had been hung in this aperture.

15th – 16th century deposits:

Recorded on the northeast area of the site was a 0.35m wide, irregular sided shallow post hole containing a mid/dark brown sandy silt with occasional charcoal and small/med sub-angular stones. The other undated post holes located within this area may be associated with this feature and may have formed a structure. However, due to the lack of dating this is only conjecture.
