Description

The site forms a roughly L–shaped area of approximately 3000 square metres and is located towards the centre of Bingham, between numbers 59 and 61 on the north side of Long Acre at the rear of the Chesterfield Arms. The evaluation revealed Late Iron Age/Roman period remains and it was therefore decided to machine strip areas within the footprints of two blocks of overburden in order to obtain a clearer picture of the archaeological deposits present on the site. Removal of the topsoil and any other overburden was undertaken by mechanical excavator using a toothless ditching bucket. Stripping revealed additional archaeological remains and several human burials at extremely shallow depths, sometimes as little as 0.15m beneath the surface. Recording and lifting of these inhumations and planning of the archaeological features was undertaken prior to careful removal of subsoil by mechanical excavator to reveal the pattern and distribution of underlying archaeological remains. The secondary strip, subsequent to removal of all shallow burials, revealed the archaeological features in greater detail. On completion of the removal of the overburden, the underlying deposits and features were cleaned by hand to enable the identification and analysis of the archaeological features exposed. Investigation of the features was undertaken only as far as required to determine their date, form and function. The work consisted of half- or quarter-sectioning of features as required and, where appropriate, the removal of layers.
