Description

The evaluation trenching involved the monitoring of removal of overburden and modern fill deposits by machine, until archaeological features, or natural deposits, were exposed. These features were cleaned by hand and located by Leica viva GPS equipment.Only trenches 1 and 2 produced archaeological features, both of which were linears cut into the natural deposit. These are thought to represent water management on the site to deal with run off from the higher land to the east. A number of tree bowls and an animal burrow were identified. The recovery of only two finds from the site is unusual, certainly for ploughed fields so close to a settlement. Metal detecting and spoil investgation was undertaken on site, but did not lead to the recovery of any additional finds. The two finds from site attest to the historical activity in the wider area, with a single /nd of Roman CBM and a single Medieval rim sherd of Shelly Ware. Palaeoenvironmental sampling yielded no archaeological or ecological material was identified within the sample, which was of a fine sandy material and appeared archaeologically sterile. No dateable material was recovered from the samples.
