Description
The development area is located on land at the corner of Newgate St and Park St, which lies just south of the historic core of Worksop. The development area measures approximately 740m² and is presently occupied by a disused public toilet.
Three trenches were excavated. One 20m trench aligned in an ‘L’ shape was excavated with 10m aligning E-W before turning N-S. A second trench was 10m in length and ran NE-SW, with the final trench being the same as the second trench, however was only 8m in length due to services being present in the NE end.
The evaluation has shown that the site has modern features present. The site has limited archaeological potential for any Prehistoric, Roman, Medieval and Post-Medieval features and is unlikely to impact upon any remains of interest. The development will have a substantial impact on the modern remains of the World War II air raid shelter, which largely remains in situ. It may affect development plans if the shelter beneath the concrete roof has not been infilled, it is unknown whether the shelter still remains an open cavity.
