Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at the former public toilets, Newgate Street, Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
The Development is approximately 740m² ha. The land is currently occupied by a now partially demolished former public toilet block and electrical substation on the corner of Newgate and Park streets and adjacent to a medical centre to the east, with commercial units to the north.
The evaluation comprised of two trenches measuring 10m in length by 1.8m in width and one trench in a linear shape measuring 20m in total by 1.8m.
The remains of several modern structures were encountered throughout the works including the remains of a Second World War air raid shelter. Therefore, the evaluation has shown that the development will have a limited impact upon archaeological remains dating from the Prehistoric, Roman, Medieval and Post-Medieval periods but a substantial impact on in-situ remains of Modern features.
