Full Description
At a depth of 0.20m in the western end of the second evaluation trench, contained a ‘u-shaped’ modern brick and cement wall that had two parallel north-south aligned walls that were 1.8m in length and continued under the north trench wall. The north east wall was 0.34m in width and the west wall 0.68m in width. The south wall had a 0.10m wide by 0.90m length stone slab abutting the wall. The modern brick wall was infilled with a loose light grey brown silty clay fill containing varying sized brick rubble inclusions. The modern wall and it’s infill were left in situ due to the excavator being unable to remove the walls.
To the east of the wall, there was a further brick and cement wall, 0.20m below multiple tarmac layers. This wall was 10 courses and was 1m in width by 1m in height, and was laid in an English bond.
These structures likely form part of a former Air Raid shelter dating to World War II, with the modern wall likely being a staircase leading into the shelter, and the further brick wall forming a foundation or ventilation wall.
