The proposed development is located north of the Gateford Toll Bar, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, c.700m east of the centre of Shireoaks and 1km west of the centre of Gateford. The Site comprised c.1.4ha of land, consisting of a single grassland field. It was defined by hedgerow field boundaries on all sides, with residential dwellings to the south-east, the B6041 to the west and the A57 to the east. Eight 30m x 2m trenches were excavated to the first archaeological horizon or natural substrate. A 14T 360-degree mechanical excavator fitted with a wide toothless ditching bucket was used to remove topsoil and subsequent material in spits of no more than 0.2m. All machine excavation was directed by an on-site supervisor and was carried out under constant archaeological supervision. The trial trenching evaluation carried out at the proposed development site uncovered two ditches on a north to south alignment and one on an east to west alignment in the eastern half of the Site. A further north-east to south-west aligned ditch was recorded in the south-western corner of the Site, which runs roughly parallel to the extant hedgerow and may be associated with the modern field boundary. No datable evidence was recovered from any of the four ditches recorded, and they do not appear on 19th and 20th century historic maps of the area. The purpose of the recorded ditches is unclear due to the sterile nature of the fills present, though it is possible that the ditches in three trenches could form a field boundary or enclosure of unknown date.
