Description
The Site covers approximately 0.67ha and is located in the centre of Newark-on-Trent immediately north of St Mary Magdalene Church and 60m north of the Market Place. The Site is a Remembrance Garden and serves as a leisure and recreational space for the public.
Intrusive groundworks were conducted under constant archaeological supervision. All mechanical excavation was completed with a toothless ditching bucket under archaeological supervision with stripping and spoil removal arranged so as to avoid any tracking across the stripped surfaces. Any features identified were hand-cleaned. Following scanning by a metal detector, features were sample excavated by hand sufficient to determine their plan and form, and to recover any datable artefacts.
The works
revealed the remains of 18th century terraced housing in the north-western part of the Site which correlated with historical mapping. A layer associated with the land use as a medieval–19th century graveyard was present across the majority of the Site. The southern part of the Site contained 226 fragments of disarticulated human bone. The range of potential dates and the fragmentary nature of the assemblage limited analysis of the assemblage. Two walls of uncertain function and a pit of dumped material were found.
