Full Description

The housing remains in the north-western part of the Site consisted of three walls. These were found to correlate and probably correlate with terraced housing depicted on historical mapping fronting Wilson Street (OS 1885a; 1885b). The houses were a continuation of the extant terraces (MNT25961) which were built from 1766 to 1936 and first depicted first depicted on the Attenborough 1790 map. The first two walls appeared to represent an exterior structure, with stone foundations and a dividing internal brick wall, forming part of up two down terraces. The wall does not directly correlate with outbuildings present in the backyards but this possibility cannot be eliminated.

The brick walls appeared to be built in stretcher bond, which is rarely used for structural walls. This may indicate that the possible exterior stone wall was the load bearing wall rather than the, probably internal, wall. The excavation depth did not exceed the abutting demolition layer and it is unknown whether surviving floor layers are associated with the structures.

The demolition layer and subsequent made ground layers are likely to correspond to the partial demolition of the Wilson Street terraces within the Site area following the Second World War.
