Description

The survey comprises 17.8 ha of agricultural land, currently utilised for crop. The site is bounded by hedgerow to the north-east, east, and south-east, with an access track bordering the western and northern perimeter. The gradiometer survey was undertaken using SenSys FGM650/3 gradiometers mounted at 1 m intervals on a hand-pushed non-magnetic cart frame, with an effective sensitivity of 0.03 nT. Data were collected at a rate of 100 Hz and interpolated to 0.1 m intervals along transects spaced 1 m apart. The gradiometer survey has been successful in detecting anomalies of archaeological origin. A double-ditch feature, accompanied by evidence of a possible bank, has been identified in the centre of the site. This is associated with an enclosure recorded from aerial photographs as dating from the Bronze Age – Roman period. A series of linear ditch features overlap the larger archaeological ditch on a different orientation. This suggests a second phase of activity, although it is not possible to comment on the date from the survey data alone. Evidence of the site's agricultural past has been identified with anomalies that correspond with the locations of known and unknown former field boundaries. Several examples of geological variation have been identified across the site. These could be related to paleochannels which are known to have archaeological finds in the local area. The remaining anomalies are expected to be modern in origin, relating to former pylons and drainage.
