Abstract/Summary
A gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Staythorpe Power Station, Nottinghamshire. The project was commissioned with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for an extension to the existing power station.
The site comprises arable fields located 630 m south-east of Staythorpe, covering an area of 17.8 ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken between 15 – 17 November 2024 and 14 – 15 April 2025.
The survey has been successful in detecting anomalies of archaeological origin. A double-ditch feature is associated with an enclosure recorded from aerial photographs as dating from the Bronze Age – Roman period. A series of linear ditch features overlap the larger archaeological ditch on a different orientation. This suggests a second phase of activity, although it is not possible to comment on the date from the survey data alone.
Evidence of the site's agricultural past has also been identified with anomalies that correspond with the locations of known and unknown former field boundaries.
Several examples of geological variation have been identified across the site. These could be related to paleochannels which are known to have archaeological finds in the local area.
The remaining anomalies are expected to be modern in origin, relating to former pylons and drainage.
