Description

The survey is located 9km south-east of Worksop and 4.5km south-west of Retford. The site lies on the north-western outskirts of Elkesley and is bounded to the south-west by Worksop Road (A1), to the south-east by Jockey lane and to the north by a reservoir. Study area: 29ha Survey Methods: Magnetometer survey (fluxgate gradiometer) Techniques: - Bartington Grad 601-2 - Traverse Interval: 1.0m - Sample Interval: 0.25m - Bartington Cart System - Traverse Interval: 1.0m - Sample Interval: 0.125m - MACS Cart System (Foerster) - Traverse Interval: 1.0m - Sample Interval: 0.125m A group of rectangular enclosures are visible in one area, along with other ditches, pits and trackways. The majority of these correspond with cropmarks that are recorded in the HER. Other magnetically weak anomalies in the area could also have archaeological origins. Uncertain responses in two areas have probably been caused by natural or agricultural process. Two former field boundaries and natural anomalies are visible in the data. Strong ferrous responses, short lengths of cable or pipes and magnetic disturbance in the first area correspond with the location of a former World War II compound.
