Abstract/Summary
A magnetometer survey of 29 hectares of land north of Worksop Road, Elkesley has recorded numerous magnetic responses interpreted as being of definite archaeological interest.
A group of rectangular enclosures are visible in one area, along with other ditches, pits and trackways. The majority of these correspond with cropmarks that are recorded in the HER. Other magnetically weak anomalies in the area could also have archaeological origins.
Uncertain responses in two areas have probably been caused by natural or agricultural process. Two former field boundaries and natural anomalies are visible in the data. Strong ferrous responses, short lengths of cable or pipes and magnetic disturbance in the first area correspond with the location of a former World War II compound.
