Description

The land lies to the west of the existing centre of Kirkby in Ashfield, approximately 6km to the southwest of Mansfield. The majority of the site falls within the parish of Kirkby in Ashfield, however the north-western corner is in the adjacent parish of Sutton in Ashfield. The site is borded to the north by the A38 Kings Mill Road between Mansfield and Alfreton: to the east by Kirkby in Ashfield; to the south by a disused railway line and the River Erewash, and to the west by farmland associated with (north to south) Birchwood Grange, Grange Farm, Dumbles Bubgalow, Franderground Farm, Shire Carr Farm and Langton Hall. Fifteen plots were initially put forward for the fieldwalking survey. A site boundary adjustment resulted in one of these being excluded; three furter plots were identified as being unsuitable for this type of survey during fieldwork. Approximately 177 hectares of land was surveyed as part of this fieldwalking scehem.Field staff walked 10m wide parallel transects across these areas, measuring from the edges of the survey atea using tape measures and marked out with coloured flags. These were recovered as each transect was walked. Each transect wakled was 10m distant from the next; the ground extending 1m to each side of each transect was visually scanned for artefacts. This gave a 20% sample of the survey plots. The exposed topsoil was visually inspected by staff for features and artefacts. Pottery, flint and metal finds were cllected and bagged; the locaiton of each find as logged as a waypoint on a handheld GPS. Other artefacts including animal bone, shell and fossils were not collected unless they had been obviously worked and were not of a recent date. In addition, a written record of the landscape being surveyed, the survey conditions and soil visibility was kept to assist in the assessment of the artefacts. A total of 664 artefacts were recovered; 572 of these were pottery, CBM, or flint artefacts which were submitted to te revelant specialists for identification.
