Full Description
A total of 664 artefacts were recovered; 572 of these were pottery, CBM or flint artefacts which were submitted to the relevant specialists for identification.
13 prehistoric flints were recovered from almost exclusively the northern half of the proposed development plot. The majority of these dated from the Mesolithic/Neolithic periods, however three of the finds are attributed to the Bronze Age, including a core fragment. It is around this area that the flint artefacts seem to be focused, apart from a single broken flake dated to the Mesolthic/Neolithic, recovered atop Boar Hill.
The Roman period is represented by a corpus of 85 pottery sherds and 2 CBM fragments. The artefact scatters show two concentrations of the Roman finds, both situated in the middle of the fieldwalking survey. One concentration was recovered from a relatively small area, and the other, close to the summit of Boar Hill. A diffuse scatter of Roman artefacts was recovered from the areas around and between these two concentrations. It is significant perhaps that no Roman artefacts were recovered from the northern or southern limits of the proposed development site.
No artefacts dating to the period defined here as early medieval were recovered during this fieldwalking project.
The medieval artefacts recovered were mainly pottery sherds. The majority of these date to between the 13th-15th centuries. Four sherds were dated to between the 11th-13th centuries, and all were recovered from one plot in the middle of the survey area, the plot which lay closest to the existing residential area on the west side of Kirkby in Ashfield. The remainder of the medieval artefacts were spread relatively evenly across the northern and central areas of the development site, with a low concentration along the 40m wide corridor making up a part of a neighbouring plot. A secondary concentration of medieval finds was located in the northern part of the plot on Boar Hill. A sparse scatter of medieval artefacts was identified in the southern plots.
The majority of finds grouped here as post-medieval were concentrated in date around 15th-16th centuries. They were recovered from across the whole of the development site, with the focus being around the central areas. Pottery types in use throughout the post-medieval and early modern period are found across the development site, showing the continuity of settlement in the surrounding towns. 199 artefacts rcovered date to the early modern period, a reflection of the growth of the town, and increasing durability and availability of the ceramics in use.
