Abstract/Summary

A fieldwalking survey of land to the west of Kirkby in Ashfield was conducted. The survey was commissioned as part of the pre-planning scehem for a proposed mixed development of a new residential estate with associated services and road network, a school, and other buildings. This report relates to the results of the fieldwalking. A search of the NHER found six entries related to the proposed evelopemnt. Fifteen plots were intially put forward for the fieldwalking survey. A site boundary adjustment resulted in one of these being excluded; three further plots were identified as being unsuitable for this type of survey during the fieldwork. During the survey, a sall number of prehistoric flints were recovered from the northern part of the site. Concentrations of Roman artefacts indicate the potential for a previously unknown Roman site. In addition, scatters of Medieval, Post-Medieval, and Early Modern pottery and ceramic building material have been recorded. This is interpreted as resulting from the use of midden and night soil material being used to improve the quality of soil, in an area where extensive ridge and furrow features have been recorded. The scatter of finds, while extensive, could not produce secure dating for the cropmarks and other features identified in an associated geophysical survey.
