Full Description
Staff from the quarry reported the discovery of four human skulls … with other material comprising animal bones. The material was not recovered insitu, but was found below (the working face) on talus and upon a spoil heap adjacent to the dragline. (1)
Nearly 200 pieces of well preserved bone were recovered. The majority were single bones but there were some groups of semi-articulated bones, including part of a human rib-cage and pelvis. The site could be interpreted as a log jam in an abandoned channel of the river Trent with an accumulation of brushwood on a gravel spit. Associated were at least 13 human, three sheep, one aurochs, four domestic cattle, one deer and two dog skulls, as well as five large antlers. Very few artefacts were recovered (mostly flint blades) [and] a 30x40cm piece of fine wickerwork At least three of the logs forming the jam had felling cuts. One rib from the partially articulated torso gave 2350 - 2030 cal BC AMS radiocarbon at two standard deviations. Taken together with the radiocarbon, dendrochronology suggests a date for deposition of the log jam c 2100BC. (3) (4)
