Full Description

Group 2: Undated deposits - Overlying the natural gravel … In Trench 5, deposits interpreted as a foundation sealed by a surface. Looser silty sands containing oyster shell and animal bone overlay the surface, probably representing an accumulation of trample and refuse. No dateable artefacts were found during the excavation of any Group 2 deposits. Group 3: Early market surface - Compact deposits containing horizontally laid pieces of lias stone or large pebbles were present within Trenches 1,2,4, and 5. These represent the remains of a surface probably associated with an early market square. Fragments of worked stone were found incorporated into surface (019). (1)
See L12127 for later depositfrom these trenches, L11634 for nearby late Med / early P Med deposits.
