Abstract/Summary
An evaluation was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of proposed development at the Market Place, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. Remains of Romano-British and later date exist in proximity to the site and previous investigations have revealed earlier, cobbled surfaces beneath the present Market Place.
A sequence of natural, undated 18th-19th century and modern deposits were revealed. Beneath the present market surface, and revealed throughout the area, were reinforced concrete rafts. The evaluation only investigated below the rafts in four of ten trenches.
Beneath the concrete were compact layers of gravel and stone that probably represent the remains of previous market surfaces, though these were undated. At least one of the stones was roughly dressed and probably derived from an earlier structure in the area, perhaps the Market Cross. Gullies of 18th-19th century date, possibly robbed service or foundation trences, cut through the stone surface. Fragments of probable 18th century pottery were the earliest dateable artefacts recovered.
