Description
Archaeological evaluation was undertaken in the Market Place, Newark. Beneath the present market surface were reinforced concrete rafts. The evaluation only investigated below these rafts in four of the ten trenches. … All the trenches were 1m square by 1m deep, except trench 1, which measured 1 x 2m and 1.5m deep. (1)
Beneath the concrete were compact layers of gravel and stone that probably represent the remains of previous market surfaces, though these were undated. At least one of the stones was roughly dressed and probably derived from an earlier structure in the area, perhaps the Market Cross. Gullies of 18th-19th century date, possibly robbed service or foundation trences, cut through the stone surface. Fragments of probable 18th century pottery were the earliest dateable artefacts recovered.
See E952 for nearby watching brief.
