Full Description
Three trenches, perpendicular to the line of the suggested Roman road. Underlying the stone enriched topsoil and gravel lenses was a distinctive layer of brown loamy sand. Up to 0.5m thick with a total width of c.11m, in section it displayed a noticeably cambered profile. The limited extent and cambered profile can be attributed to the protective effect of the overlying agger and metalled surfaces of the Ro road. Removal by hand in Trench 03 led to a high level of finds recovery, forming a relatively substantial assemblage of flint, pottery, saddle quern fragments and heat affected stone, in addition to fired clay and charcoal fragments. A rare example of a probably pre-Ro ploughsoil. (1)
