Full Description

2 enclosures. One is long and rectangular with an entrance facing E. (1) (2)
A rather small mark located in a flat and nearly level grass field. An L shaped mark with the same appearance and orientation lies abutting the hedgerow to the N. No finds were made and there is no surface indication of the marks. (3)
Cropmarks - recorded from the air in 1977, showing 2 rectangular enclosures with internal enclosures (round structures perhaps ?). These appear to be farmsteads of Ro or late Preh date. (4)
Excavations … revealed evidence of an extensive settlement with earlier Iron Age or possibly Late Bronze Age origins, but dating mainly from the late 1st millennium BC and 1st century AD. Four main structural phases were identified on stratigraphical and spatial grounds, commencing with a period of possibly open settlement (Phase 1). The features of this early phase were cut by the boundary ditch of Enclosure 1 (Phase 2) which in turn was succeeded by a rectilinear boundary system (Phase 3) and by Enclosure 2 (Phase 4). It is unclear how long occupation had continued, but Phase 4 is unlikely to predate the mid-1st century AD. Substantial quantities of domestic pottery and other refuse were obtained from features of these phases, including saddle and rotary querns and rubbing stones, triangular loomweights, daub, briquetage, vitrified material, a La Tene glass bead, occasional items of ironwork and a copper alloy ring…… Few bones were preserved in the acidic subsoil (11), but charred plant remains deriving in part from domestic crops were obtained from a number of features. (5) (12) Spelt and barley were the most common cereal crops recovered, along with weed seeds (of which grass was the most common). This suggests that the crops were harvested by reaping low on the straw or by uprooting. P.1 (12)
72.9.1 - 72.9.5 Group interpreted as Iron Age Settlement. (6)
There was a petrological study of the thin sections taken of seven sherds of pottery recovered during the excavation of the settlement. Two sherds have a distinctive tempers which suggest an Anglo-Saxon date. If the two sherds from Gamston are indeed Late Iron Age, it would make them the earliest known examples of this type of granitics tempered pottery by some 6/7 hundred years. Bearing this in mind it would be worthwhile checking to make sure that an Iron Age date is secure in these sherds, and it would perhaps affect the phasing of the site. (13)
