Full Description

Extensive surface disturbance in Hall Yard, E of the church, is locally believed to be the site of the college buildings and ground evidence supports this, but, other than the remains of a possible perimeter moat (L8106) there is nothing surveyable. (1)
A complex of earthworks in rectangular (sic). To NE a fairly regular layout of a large rectangular (sic). ... There was a chantry house here for a warden and 6 chaplains. (2)
The site may have been the home of Thomas de Sibthorpe in C14. An early C17 map in the county archives shows a range of buildings in this field and the same fishponds. ... More humps and bumps can also be seen to the W of the scheduled area under more pasture and it may be that these earthworks are all part of the remains of the moving village (sic). (3)
Chantry chapel with warden and assistant priest endowed by Thomas Sibthorpe, licenced in 1325. Later expanded to 3 chantries served by a warden and 6 chaplains. Surrendered in 1540. (4)
Thomas de Sibthorpe began to found a Chauntry here, which … he improved into a College. Granted to Richard Whalley 37 Henry 8. (Thoroton). In the village lived the family of Burnell (Edward Burnell married Whalley's widow) in a large mansion, of which a trace is not visible, except a very large Dove-house (Throsby). (6)
In the Portland manuscripts; "1608 … the manor house of Sibthorpe called the Chantry House or College House of the Blessed Mary in Sibthorpe with the dovecote." (7)
Map of Sibthorpe by Senior, 1629, shows an L-shaped range of buildings with more buildings to the north-west. It also shows the fishponds. However the dovecote is not visible. (8)
Geophysical anomalies show foundations of Manor house, outbuildngs etc, which may incorporate parts of the college buildings. (12)
See M8102 for dovecote, M8103 fishponds, M8105 manor house, L8106 perimeter ditch
