Full Description

Circular stone dovecote, 10m diameter at base and tapering in towards the top, 15m high. Built out of lias limestone with odd pieces of tile and brick inserted. Small low doorway has Ancaster stone for its joints and lintels. One of only 3 surviving circular stone dovecotes in the county. An early C17 map in the county archives ... shows the dovecote in a different position which raises questions about its assumed Med date. (2)
Circular stone dovecote, conical roof, C13/C14, 31ft dimater, 60ft high. Stone nesting boxes - 1260 in 28 tiers. The building may relate to monastic/ collegiate estates of early Med times. (4)
Dovecote in field near church (originally in grounds of manor house). Medieval (pre 1601) possibly 13th Century? Independent ciruclar structure of limestone with 3 ft thick coursed rubble. Conical roof with plain tiles (originally had a glover at apex). 60 ft high to apex, 40 ft high to eaves. 98 ft circumference at 4ft from the ground. 1260 nest holes in 1927. (6)
The most likely date for the building is in the 1340s when the college to which it was attached was being expanded and built. … The Senior survey places it further to the N of its present position, I consider this to be a cartographical error, and that it has always stood in the present position. … nesting boxes for 1148 birds. (9)
Timber samples from the doorway were analysed in 1998 which resulted in a felling date between AD 1535 and 1555. (10)
The dates '1691' and '1697' have been incised into the eastern door jam ('1697') and into a wooden lintel on the inside of the door ('1691'). The wooden lintel also has 'IK' and 'IV' carved into it. (11)
The floor surface had been extensively disturbed in places by rabbit burrows, particularly in the area directly opposite the door. The rabbits have damaged the scheduled monument. (11)
No evidence regarding the date of construction of the dovecote was found during a watching brief by NCC and the only datable artefacts were modern, these being recovered from the upper levels of the twig deposit. (11)
See M1443 for college & cross refs.
