Full Description
Thomas de Sibthorpe began to found a Chauntry here, which … he improved into a College. Granted to Richard Whalley 37 Henry 8. (Thoroton). In the village lived the family of Burnell (Edward Burnell married Whalley's widow) in a large mansion, of which a trace is not visible, except a very large Dove-house. The park, which adjoined it, is now in divisions of grazing ground (Throsby). (1)
The habitations of chantry priests … were dwelling houses of the stereotyped Med plan. (2)
In the Portland manuscripts; "1608 … the manor house of Sibthorpe called the Chantry House or College House of the Blessed Mary in Sibthorpe with the dovecote." (3)
Map of Sibthorpe by Senior, 1629, shows an L-shaped range of buildings with more buildings to the north-west. It also shows the fishponds. However the dovecote is not visible. (4)
In the middle of the site there is a general area of higher resistance ... interpreted as wall foundations of the Manor House. Rooms and partition walls can be identified in addition to the main exterior walls. Extending to the NW and SW are further foundations which are perhaps the kitchens and other service areas to the main house. To the W are a series of less well defined anomalies, interpreted as outbuildings, workshops or stables. To the S are curvilinear high resistance anomalies, thought to be embankments forming landscaping features around a garden. Within this area are several features including … possibly an ornamental pond and paths. (5)
See M1443 for chantry college, M8102 for dovecote, M8103 for fish ponds.
