In White's 1832 directory, Thomas North is listed as "colliery owner, Babbington Cottage". By 1842 North and partners had 4 small mines at Babbington. In 1856, WW Fyfe noted that the small Babbington pits had a ready sale for ironstone to the Stanton ironworks; and he described the pumping engine at Babbington, which was a 120-horsepower Watt beam engine, and a winder at the same pit, a 40-horsepower high-pressure engine. (3)

Small dark toned maculae, slightly mounded. Possible shaft mounds. (5)
