Full Description

Dobson's Silk Throwsters, Lawn, 1740. Millpond now a garden. In 1946 the mill was re-roofed and lined with brick but the walls are original. Water still runs under mill. All old machinery removed (04/06/1963). (1)
At one end of the mill pool is a ruin which must [be] the shell of the mill. Its earliest source of power was … horse capstans … later replaced by a 24-ft water-wheel. A windmill followed … and by c.1790 a steam engine had been installed. Other buildings survive at the … site. The existing factory … is operated by Messrs Dobson. Unwin built another mill at Tansley near Matlock … which still stands. (2)
The surviving remains of Samuel Unwin's large cotton mill of 1770 are to be seen beside the pool near Lucknow Drive, Eastfields side. The remains are slight but the Gothic style can be discerned. (3) (7)
Named 'Sutton Works'. (6)
Apart from some external walling and the millpond, now part of the Lawns Park, nothing remains. The last of the buildings were removed in the 1980s and 1990s to make way for housing. Mill mentioned in 1288 and 1328. In 1740 Samuel Unwin acquired the site and erected a spinning mill, initially ox-driven. It was soon converted to water power with a 24ft diameter waterwheel powering 6 reeling machines, fulling stocks and twisting mills. The building was 4 storey and castellated with a windmill on the roof to pump water back into the millpond. In 1788 a Newcomen engine was installed. (8)
