Full Description
APs show extensive cropmarks including enclosures, linear features, a circle S of Burridge Farm and E of road. Rectangular enclosure, probably with inverted passage entrance and other internal features. In the field can be seen rows of parallel black circles, which are probably non-archaeological. Complex of ring ditches and rectangular enclosures and droveways. (1) (2) (3) (4)
Scheduled as an "IA Settlement". No evidence given and the site is more likely to be a multi period river gravel settlement area. (8)
Extensive probably IA settlement site lying on the banks of one of the tributary streams of the Trent near Newark. APs show a number of overlapping enclosures, several of which are probably IA fields belonging to a settlement site relatively sharply concentrated in an area which shows many smaller enclosures, hut circles and an access road. This nucleus of the site has only just managed to escape being built on by a series of large barns erected between 1949 and 1975. Not all the ditch lines are of Preh date - at least one field ditch (and probably more parallel to it) is a relic of the modern field boundaries (as the photos show). (9)
A scatter of RB pottery (L11151) is located a short distance from a cropmark enclosure. If these scatters and cropmarks were related then this is the sort of pattern that is usually ascribed to manuring from a settlement. (11)
The survey located a number of anomalies of archaeological potential. Some responses related to cropmarks identified from aerial photographs. The site was effected in some places by strong ferrous disturbance … some of which may not be of modern origin. (12)
The gradiometer survey has identified a wealth of anomalies of archaeological interest. A series of ditches forming enclosures, or trackways, and several large pits have been recorded. Possible small scale industrial type features have also been detected and there is a suggestion of a ring ditch, although interpretation is tentative. The geophysical data show a generally good correlation with the AP evidence, though some cropmark features have not been identified and additional magnetic responses have been recorded. (13)
See L8364-6 for finds, L2993 for further cropmarks. See L8356-62 for nearby cropmark complex.
