Full Description

2 storey structure, has had some alteration, evidence suggests use by framework knitters. There has been some modern extension to the building which is now in use as a shop. See NIAR archive file for detailed description. (1)

Houses. Early and mid C18. [Three] Yorkshire sashes, the central one altered. Altered late C19 shop window. (2)

On stylistic grounds, 17-21 Boar Lane was thought to date to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. As a result of the tree-ring analysis only one timber from Bay 1 at 17 Boar Lane has been successfully dated, to a felling date of AD 1451. In contrast, the four timbers from Bay 2 nearer 21 Boar Lane that produced dates consistent with felling during the seventeenth century, one some time within the range of AD 1600-20, and three in c. AD 1657. A large number of the timbers in this building appear to have been reused, and there is evidence of later re-building. Those samples from Bay 2 are believed to fall into this category, representing later insertions and repairs to the roof. Only one sample was dated from the main building during the second phase of sampling, felled in AD 1434 at the earliest. If this is the case, the date would coincide with the fifteenth century dates gained from Bay 1 in 17 Boar Lane, rather than the seventeenth century dates gained for Bay 2, which is actually physicaly closer to 21 Boar Lane.
