Full Description

Pingley Bridge - sheepwash nearby. (1)
Bridge shown on Chapman and Sanderson. (2) (3)
Single arch brick-built structure which has been successively widened and strengthened. The span of the bridge averages 3.45m. Phase 1: single arched bridge of c.1800 constructed of thin hand-made bricks. Phase 2: extention to the north in late 19th century of machine-moulded bricks. Not bonded to the original bridge. Phase 3: Further northward widening, probably c.1950 constructed of wire-cut bricks. Bonded to phase 2 at every third course. Phase 4: extension to the south, constructed in 1960s or 70s, of concrete slabs with brick façade. The original brick arch of c.1800 is hidden some three metres behind this façade. The earliest part of the present building was not built before c.1780. There is a possibility that an earlier bridge crossed the stream at this point, the foundations of which may survive beneath the present structure. (4)
Modifications to Pingley Dyke and Pingley Bridge took place at the point where the new road meets the existing Staythorpe Road. Minor structural alterations were planned as part of the road construction. A watching brief was undertaken during the course of these modifications, which took place to the N of the bridge. A modern stone wall was revealed, this post dated Phase 3 (c.1950). No evidence of an earlier crossing of Pingley Dyke was encountered and only the 1950s façade of the later phase of the bridge was affected by the construction of the new road. (5)
