Abstract/Summary
This report describes the final stage of work at Staythorpe in connection with the Averham Relief Road. Modifications to Pingley Dyke and Pingley Bridge took place at the point where the new road meets the existing Staythorpe Road. Minor structural alterations to the post-medieval Pingley Bridge were planned as part of the road construction.
A watching brief was undertaken during the course of these modifications, which took place to the north of the bridge. A modern stone wall was revealed forming a revetment wall to one side of the Dyke; this post-dated Phase 3 of the bridge (c.1950). Wooden stakes found on the stream bed appeared to represent the remains of formwork used in the construction of the bridge. No evidence of an earlier crossing of Pingley Dyke was encountered, and only the 1950's façade of the later Phase of the bridge was affected by the construction of the new road.
