Full Description

Thoroton mentions the village, consisting of 7 or 8 houses in 1797; but White states that in c 1794 there were 14 houses standing near the church. (1) (2)
A deserted village of Med date. All that now exists within the area is a ruined church. (3)
Mr F Warburton (the present tenant) has a small print from an old map (without publication information) showing 12 houses, several small ponds and a road leading from a building, on the site of the present Low Farm, down to the old course of the river. Though no evidence of building material can be seen, the area at SK 800853 shows considerable disturbance. There are numerous dried up ponds, varying from 0.5 to 2.6m in depth, ditches and banks, small fields, and platforms suggesting building sites. The roadway is a wide gully, average depth c 1.6m and according to the tenant has some metalling just below the surface. (4)
The village was not a victim of the depopulating enclosures of the C15. It is known that it was privately enclosed in C18, but the details of this are not known... The village still had 15 houses and a church in the mid C18 ... By 1851 only 2 houses were inhabited but a map by Joseph Moor in 1865 shows that the village had completely disappeared except for the church. (5)
The original schedule consisted of the field to the E of Low Farm. Within this area lie earthworks 1-2m high of deep streets, possible house platforms and possible ponds (dried up). The site of St Helen's church is now a fenced off area, with only the graveyard visible above ground. The graveyard was still in use for burials in 1955. In 1988 the scheduled area was extended to include the field to the W and S of Low Farm. This field contains a number of earthworks and a large pond. (7)
See maps SK 78 NE and SK 88 NW. See M8760 for St Helen's Church (site of).
