Full Description

Ro settlement on the Notts side of the Trent where the Ro road, Till Bridge Lane, from Lincoln to Doncaster, crosses the river. First identified with Segelocum by Camden, confirmed by a milestone found in Lincoln in 1879 inscribed ALSMP XIIII ( ? "A Lindo Segelocum mp xiiii"). Much antiquarian interest in the site, Stukeley mentions surrounding ditch, foundations between village and river, and finds of coins, signets, a face urn and coarse pottery. An 18ft wide ford of large stones retained by large timber piles was removed in 1820, coin of Hadrian found amoung the timbers. (2)
No remains seen. The land between the village and the river now occupied by dyke and towing path. The fields around Littleborough are in the main pasture but gardens still produce Ro material. Location of finds not ascertained. No visible remains of ford. (3) (4)
Area of SAM is that in which pottery has been found over the years. Nearly all of this has been made arable and is not accessible. (5)
Most land in the vicinity under plough again, pot scatters common. Bank NW of the hamlet almost ploughed out - trenched in 1954 by W Clark of Retford, who found it to be a mid C18 floodbank. Ro road found by him, burials and occupation debris from boreholes. Wade suggests site had a military origin. (7)
Field boundaries changed, whole scheduled area now one large field. (8)
The situation of Littleborough … suggests a possible military origin for the settlement. The excavated buildings could be interpreted as barrack blocks, however their continuing occupation on the same alignment into at least early C3 suggests they are civilian. The AP evidence shows a town plan similar to many found in Britian, but suggests that flooding within the Ro period led to major replanning. Alluviation over part of the settlement began during late C2/early C3. (9)
See L10650 for Med finds, L10651 for E Med finds, L5032 - cropmarks, L5034,5 - nearby finds, M5047 - church, with Ro tiles.
