Saracen's Head Hotel - late Med. The front is probably mid C18. The actual building is a Med timber framed structure and the buildings facing the yard are all of exposed timber framing. The building was the scene of the surrender of Charles I to the Scottish Commissioners on 06/05/1646. There are also other historical associations. (1)
21 timber samples were analysed in 1987 (11 slices had been obtained from the roof timbers of the main building in Jan 1983, with a further 10 being cored from the timbers of the unused barn portion, on the other side of the courtyard, in August 1987 [north range]. No conclusive date was produced. Further sampling was recommended. (2)
41 timber samples were collected in 1988 from different areas of the building producing likely felling dates of 1463 for the south and north ranges 1468 for the east range. (3)
The late medieval coaching inn, now called the Saracens Head, is a part timber framed
construction dating from the late 15th century through to the modern era. Thermographic imaging was carried out on a section of half-timber and plaster wall forming a bridge linking the north and centre ranges of the inn. Some timber is visible to the eye but it was unclear as to the true extent of timbering beneath the plaster. The extent of the concealed timberwork is strikingly evident in the thermal image, along with some horizontal laths around the central window and to the right of the image. Prior to this analysis the bridge was thought only to contain minimal timbers, around the small window…part of which are evident in the interior. However, it is now clear that the whole structure is timber framed in similar manner to other parts of the medieval building. (4)
