Full Description

[The] manor house … belonged to the Clifton family at the time that the gatehouse was built. It is of brick with a diaper pattern, dates from the early C16, and is reached across a new bridge over the moat. (1)
To the NW of the house is a large brick C16 gatehouse in excellent condition, as described by (1), and adjoining it a bridge over the moat of similar date and construction but possessing modern parapets. (2)
Tree-ring estimates … for the main group of timbers … [are] 1578-98. Dates of others ranged from early 16th to mid 18th centuries. (3)
Hodsock Priory gatehouse formed the gatehouse to a moated manorial complex the other elements of which have been demolished or replaced. It is constructed of brick with limestone dressings and dates from the early 16th century. It is three bays in length and consists of three stories and cellars. The central bay is taken up by the carriageway which rises through two stories and is flanked by the end bays beneath which the two cellar rooms are situated. (4)
