Full Description
Former public house, now shop and office. Mid C18, raised and refronted c.1840, with mid C19 additions. (1)
Upper cruck (2)
Prior to tree-ring analysis, this building was thought to date to the mid-eighteenth century. It is now known that five timbers of the main building are from felled trees in AD 1656 with another two also probably felled at this time, with construction believed to have followed soon after. (3)
The sampling undertaken on the upper cruck-blades in the later extension at the rear has dated this addition to AD 1745. This date matches verly closely to the AD 1740 date gained for the similar cruck-blades dated at Potterdyke House, in nearby Lombard Street. (3)
At the time of sampling it was believed that much of the timber had been used previously and it was postulated that perhaps an earlier building had been dismantled and its timber used to build the present structure. Previous sampling in Castlegate had dated 40-44, immediately adjacent to this building, to AD 1330. In fact, Richard Sheppard undertook his building survey of 40-44 Castlegate he suggested that it had been connected as 'part of the same property or functional group' to a structure on the site of the Swan and Salmon (36-38 Castlegate) (Sheppard, 1999, 2). This raised the question as to whether originally house numbers 40-44 belonged to a terrace of houses, which extended as far as the present Old Swan and Salmon site (36-38 Castlegate). One sample had a last heartwood date of AD 1280, and is thought to have a felling date in the first half of the fourteenth century. This would match very closely to the AD 1330 date gained for 40-44 Castlegate, perhaps supporting this idea. (3)
