Full Description

Named 'Hall'. (1)
In 1728-31 a rather plain and box-like house [was built]. The house was designed by John Sanderson. (2)
In 1857 the Palladian house of c.1730 … burnt down. (3)
Kelham Hall belonged originally to the Sutton family and was in existence by 1674 - rebuilt in Georgian style 1728-1731. In 1843 Anthony Salvin was employed to undertake extensive alterations to the Hall. A new Jacobean-style servants' wing was added, the front of the house was faced with stone, and an ornamental balcony was constructed around the roof. In 1857 George Gilbert Scott was employed to make minor alterations, but these were barely completed when on 26/11/1857 the whole house was virtually destroyed by fire, except for the new service wing. (4)
See M13970 for second hall.
