Full Description
At the west end of the trench, two pits were both truncated by later pit. All three were reasonably shallow with similar profiles, with four sherds of 16th – 18th century Brown-glazed Earthenware and Humberware pottery (and a residual sherd from the early medieval period), and iron nail and a small quantity of animal bone recovered from the single fill of the latest pit. This gives a terminus ad quem of the late medieval / early post-medieval period for pits, with the residual 12th – 13th century Nottingham Splashed-ware sherd possibly originating from one of these pits. Suggested as being a midden for first house on site. (1)
