Full Description

Although Oswald excavated slightly more than one quarter of the total area within the visible defences (c.1½ acres) in a series of six foot squares between 1910-36 his interpretation of the history of the site was fundamentally flawed, being dominated by the concept of a Roman fort for which there is no real known evidence.
