Full Description

Trench 4: Roman pottery evident throughout the suboil across the whole trench. Ditch containing 2nd century pottery, animal bone and fragments of tegula. Second ditch 1m to the west of the first, NNE-SW. Third ditch NNE-SSW and truncated the other two. It contained early 2nd - mid 3rd century pottery and animal bone. A fourth NNE-SSW ditch contained late 3rd - early 4th century pottery. Large oval pit containing pottery and animal bone. Trench 5: Row of three pits in central portion. One contained mid 1st - early 2nd century pottery. Series of intercutting ditches and gullies. Finds were mainly 2nd century - pottery, roof tile and animal bone. Gully containing 3rd - 4th century pottery. Trench 6: Pit containing 3 quern stone fragments and 1st - 2nd century pottery. Trench 7: Three intercutting ditches containing pottery ranging from 1st - 3rd centuries. Trench 8: Roman ditch with inhumation burial cut into it (see MNT27090). Another NNE-SSW orientated ditch with steep concave sides and a fill containing fragments of mid 3rd - mid 4th century pottery and animal bone. Another ditch contained pottery of late 2nd to early 4th century date and had an inhumation burial cut into the upper fill (see MNT27092). A ditch 0.7m wide containing mid 2nd - late 3rd century pottery. Four gullies , broadly orientated east-west truncated three ditches. One of the gullies contained 2nd century pottery. A north-south aligned ditch which had been widened and deepened contained mid 1st - early 2nd century pottery and animal bone. Two post holes and two pits were dated to the Roman period. Trench 9: NE-SW ditch containing one sherd of 2nd to mid 3rd c entury pottery. Trench 10: NNE-SSW ditch 1.7m wide containing late 2nd - early 3rd century pottery, animal bone and stone. Trench 12: Irregular pit containing 3rd-4th century pottery. NNW-SSE narrow gully containing 2nd -3rd century pottery. Trench 16: A series of intercutting ditches. Pottery from fills ranged from mid 3rd - mid 4th century pottery. Trench 19: A complex serices of intercutting gullies and pits. Fills contained pottery dating from 3rd - 4th centuries. Geotechnical Pit 6: A linear feature contained Roman pottery and a piece of modern tile so the early material might be residual. (1)
