Full Description
Trench 2: 14 fragments of Roman roof tiles. Roof tiles in basal fill of clay extraction pit within trench (MNT27212), along with Roman grey ware, assists in dating the pit to Romano-British period.
Trench 3: 14 fragments of Roman roof tiles. Clay extraction pit present in trench 2 also present here. The amount of RB roofting material, the possible box flue tile, and the amout of limestone found within the RB horizons suggest that the clay pits were backfilled with construction/demolition debris from a relatively high status building.
Trench 7: rooftile fragments in backfill of robber trench.
Five trenches were excavated in order to assess the reliability of Daniels' 1959 excavation records, as well as to firmly establish a firm location of the Roman villa and related bathhouse structure.
