Element record MNT27221 - N-S wall of cold room of Roman villa, Southwell

Summary

Wall uncovered in trench 7 during trial trench evaluations. This was probably already uncovered in Daniels' 1959 excavation, but due to unreliability of the maps he produced, it remains uncertain.

Full Description

This wall is almost certainly the same structure that labelled the earlier wall by Daniels, within the area of the Cold Bath. The western face of the wall was far more convincing than the eastern, but it was probably 1.2m wide, which relates well to the 3 feet 6 inches recorded by Daniels. This wall is demonstrably contemporary with wall MNT27221, which was constructed at right angles to it. It is not clear whether Daniels encountered this wall. The results of this evaluation judges that this wall and wall MNT27221 are contemporaneous.
